River Hawks Travel to Albuquerque for First-Ever Matchup Against New Mexico Ice Wolves

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — The Grand Junction River Hawks head south this weekend for a new chapter in their inaugural NAHL season, traveling to Albuquerque for their first-ever meetings with the New Mexico Ice Wolves on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24.

The two-game series at Outpost Ice Arena features a compelling cross-division matchup between a Grand Junction team looking to strengthen its position in the Mountain Division and a New Mexico squad riding a three-game winning streak.

With both teams coming off competitive road weekends, the stage is set for an intriguing first meeting between the two organizations.

RIVER HAWKS LOOK TO BUILD ON STRONG START

Grand Junction enters the weekend with a 6–5–1 record and 13 points, sitting second in the Mountain Division.

The River Hawks are coming off a weekend split against the Pueblo Peppers, highlighted by a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory Friday night. Forward Lincoln Martin scored twice in the third period, erasing a one-goal deficit and delivering the game-winning goal.

Martin continues to be a key offensive contributor for Grand Junction, with six goals and ten points through the team’s first 12 games.

The River Hawks have scored 34 goals this season, averaging 2.83 per game, while their defensive identity and commitment to special teams continue to develop.

One of Grand Junction’s biggest strengths has been its penalty kill, operating at an impressive 90.9% through 12 games. The River Hawks successfully killed 10 of 11 Pueblo power plays last weekend, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance Saturday.

As the team prepares for another challenging road environment, maintaining that defensive discipline will be a key to success.

SCOUTING THE ICE WOLVES: A DANGEROUS TEAM FINDING ITS STRIDE

New Mexico enters the series with a 2–8–0–2 record in the South Division, but its recent results tell a much different story than its overall record.

After a difficult start to the season, the Ice Wolves have found momentum, earning three consecutive victories against Lone Star and El Paso.

New Mexico defeated the Lone Star Brahmas 2–1 in a shootout before sweeping El Paso with back-to-back 2–1 overtime victories.

Saturday’s win over the Rhinos was particularly dramatic. Trailing 1–0 late in regulation, Porter Bayer scored with just over a minute remaining to force overtime. Koen Harrold then delivered the game-winner less than two minutes into the extra period.

While New Mexico has struggled offensively this season, averaging 1.75 goals per game through its first 12 contests, the Ice Wolves have demonstrated an ability to remain competitive in close games.

The Ice Wolves are led by second-year head coach Kyle McKenzie, whose team finished second in the South Division last season with a 35–19–4–1 record.

Grand Junction will need to be prepared for a hungry opponent looking to turn its recent momentum into sustained success.

One of the most significant statistical differences entering the weekend is offensive production.

Grand Junction has scored 13 more goals than New Mexico through the same number of games, giving the River Hawks an advantage of more than one goal per contest.

However, New Mexico’s recent defensive performances have been impressive, allowing just three goals over its last three victories.

That sets up an interesting challenge: Can Grand Junction establish its offensive attack against a New Mexico team that has recently found success in low-scoring games?

THREE KEYS TO THE WEEKEND

1. Establish the Pace Early

New Mexico has demonstrated an ability to keep games close and find ways to win late. Grand Junction will look to establish its forecheck, generate offensive-zone pressure, and dictate the pace from the opening puck drop.

2. Win the Special Teams Battle

With a penalty kill operating above 90%, the River Hawks have established a strong defensive foundation. Continuing that success while generating more production on the power play could be a deciding factor.

3. Turn Defense Into Offense

The River Hawks’ identity of “Defense Creates Offense” will be tested against a New Mexico team gaining confidence. Strong reloads, effective tracking, and controlling the middle of the ice will be essential in creating turnovers and transition opportunities.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Lincoln Martin — Grand Junction River Hawks

Martin has emerged as an offensive difference-maker, highlighted by his two-goal third period in Friday’s victory over Pueblo. His ability to finish scoring opportunities will be important against a New Mexico team that has tightened up defensively.

Reid Taylor — Grand Junction River Hawks

Taylor continues to provide offensive contributions and leadership, recording a goal in Friday’s victory over Pueblo. His playmaking ability and experience will be valuable as Grand Junction looks to generate sustained offensive pressure.

Koen Harrold — New Mexico Ice Wolves

Harrold enters the weekend with momentum after scoring Saturday’s overtime winner against El Paso. His recent performance highlights New Mexico’s ability to capitalize in critical moments.

A FIRST MEETING WITH PLENTY AT STAKE

While the River Hawks and Ice Wolves compete in separate divisions, this weekend represents an important opportunity for both organizations.

For Grand Junction, the focus remains on developing consistency, building its road identity, and continuing to establish the standards necessary to compete in the Mountain Division.

For New Mexico, the series represents an opportunity to extend its winning streak and continue climbing out of an early-season hole.

With two hungry teams and a new matchup on the schedule, fans can expect a competitive weekend of NAHL hockey in Albuquerque.
